We've got a new product and we're so excited to tell you about it! It's a sulfur soap, great for oily skins to get rid of acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. Don't expect it to smell like flowers though... sulfur stinks! No, we mean it literally stinks. But that's how you know it's completely natural!
WHAT IS SULFUR
Simply put, sulfur is a naturally occurring mineral found in hot springs, clay and volcanic ash. It is an essential component for plant growth and literally for all living cells. We can even find it throughout our body in amino acids, vitamins, and our skin and hair. It's known for its yellow color and its strong smell (but you may already know that).
Sulfur has been used throughout history for medical purposes, thanks to its antimicrobial properties (fun fact: It's also used in wine-making), but when it comes to skincare, you'll commonly find it in acne spot treatments, masks, and soaps.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
As a topical acne treatment, sulfur works similarly to benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, but it's way gentler on your skin. Sulfur helps dry out the surface of your skin to help absorb excess oil (sebum) that may contribute to acne breakouts. It also dries out dead skin cells to help unclog your pores.
WHAT TYPES OF ACNE DOES IT WORK FOR?
Sulfur works best for breakouts that are formed with a combination of dead skin cells and excess sebum. These include milder forms of acne, such as whiteheads and blackheads. It clears the skin cells that are dead, preventing pore blockage. Sulfur is also a bacteriostatic agent, which prevents pimple development. How? It prevents bacteria from multiplying.
Sensitive and oily skin types are the ones that benefit the most from sulfur, because of its drying effect. But don't worry, it is not as aggressive as other acne products like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid since it's completely natural. Sulfur acne soaps or using a sulfur acne mask can help you have clear skin without causing any irritation and redness if applied once a week.
BENEFITS OF SULFUR FOR SKIN
Some of the characteristics of sulfur that make it great as an acne treatment are also helpful for treating an array of other skin concerns, for instance:
Dries out blemishes: it reduces sebum (oil) on the skin. When applied to the blemish, sulfur works to dry out the skin so it can then be sloughed away.
it works to exfoliate dead skin, remove impurities, and prevent clogged pores.
it has antibacterial properties, kills bacteria, fungi, and various parasites.
TREATS SENSITIVE SKIN CONDITIONS
it is anti-inflammatory and helps to soften and exfoliate thick, dead skin. It's also known to treat eczema and rosacea.
Now you know everything that we do about sulfur and how beneficial it is for your skin. You won't smell like flowers, but it will help you get rid of acne, blackheads, and whiteheads, without using harsh chemicals on your skin. Are you up for trying? :)
