Environmental Causes for Split Ends

What are split ends? Exactly what it sounds like: when the ends of your hair are no longer a whole but have split into two or more pieces. Not so cute, right? Well, we’re going to share with you some of the most common environmental causes for split ends and our secret to getting rid of them!

Your hair is made up of a protein called keratin. When UV rays hit your hair, they target the outermost layers first, called cuticles, eroding keratin. Your hair's external layers are then destroyed, essentially leaving your hair vulnerable to radiation. Oftentimes, the sun can be just as damaging to your hair as bleaching it!

These factors can all lead to dryness, which ultimately causes split ends as well. They tend to dismantle the chemical bonds of the internal hair fiber. For example, humidity may cause pores to open and cuticles to lift exposing them to harmful influences, and extreme wind may lead to moisture loss.

All those days in the ocean, or weekends in the pool are great. But the water? Definitely not your hair’s best friend! Chlorine is one of the harshest chemicals your hair may encounter. When exposed to chlorine, your hair is stripped of it’s natural oils and can cause your hair cuticles to break. Saltwater can also be quite damaging since it dries out your hair and scalp, leading to a lack of moisture. It’s great for a good ole hair and scalp cleanse every so often, but leave the salt in your hair for too long and it’ll dry your hair out and leave it fine and brittle.

What can you do to prevent all this from happening while still living your life? Well we don't know of a cure all, but for starters we can recommend to always shower after swimming in the ocean or pools and use natural moisturizing hair products before and after your water days!

What if your hair is already damaged? You need to do something else to get your shiny hair back. And we have a product that’s great for that; the Amber + Argan shampoo and conditioner bar. Nutrient rich argan oil works its magic on the hair in a number of ways. It’s full of many beneficial ingredients like Vitamin E with fatty acids that make it a great moisturizing ingredient to use on your hair.

Thanks to its powerful antioxidant properties, argan oil helps to neutralize hair damage, as well as providing the moisture it needs to help prevent future damage, splitting, and breakage. Originally from Morocco, Argan oil has been used by Moroccan women for centuries to protect skin and hair from sun damage, helping to prevent drying from ultraviolet rays.

Whether your goal is to maintain the quality and health of virgin strands or to repair your split ends, argan oil is a must-have for everyone. Try our Amber + Argan shampoo and conditioner, we promise, you’ll see a huge difference!

We hoped that you learned something new today. Harsh weather conditions, UV rays, and water are not the only causes of split ends, there are many other causes that might be chemical, mechanical, nutritional, or even genetics. We’ll get to these other causes in another post one day. But for now, thank you for your time and we hope you get to try our argan oil hair bar!
